Qorvo's ACT2823 is a high-performance, low-profile battery management IC that enables the smallest size solutions for backup battery packs and standalone battery chargers without the need for cell balancing. Each solution can be implemented with a single ACT2823 IC.

The product integrates all the functions that a backup battery pack needs, including switching charger, boost converter and LED indication. The product also includes an input to obtain user feedback (for example, via a push button), to support various user-interface functions such as turn on/off charging and query charging status. The IC supports LED indication to display charging level on 4 LEDs.

ACT2823 operates at 400 kHz for switching charger and 400 kHz for boost converter allowing tiny external inductor and capacitors. ACT2823 provides a direct power path from input to output with programmable current limit while providing power to switching charger. Output has higher priority than battery charger if the programmed input current limit is reached.

The product charges the battery with the full cycle of preconditioning, fast charge with constant current and constant voltage until end of charge. The battery charger is thermally regulated at 110 °C with charge current foldback. The product's boost converter steps battery voltage up to 5 V. The boost converter features high efficiency, constant current regulation, short circuit protection and over-voltage protection.

ACT2823EVK1EA2823QJ-T1000 Evaluation Kit (Supports the ACT2823QJ-T1000 IC)

    EA2823QJ-T1000 User's Guide

This kit is a proven application-circuit design for the ACT2823QJ-T1000 charger with power path and single USB outputs.

The EVK contains a single micro-USB input and USB output. It provides a 2.4A output. It is configured to charge a battery with 2.4A. The EVK operates with very high charge efficiency of 91% and discharge efficiency of 95% (Vbat=4.1V). This EVK demonstrates the ACT2823QJ-T1000 charger, but other ACT2823xxx options can be evaluated on this EVK by replacing the IC and any other necessary components.
