Active-Semi’s high power automotive DC/DC converters offer high efficiency switched-mode power supply (SMPS) circuits to reduce power loss and heat while charging your iPad® and/or iPhone®. Limiting power loss in the car charger enables ultra-slim form factors for single or dual-port chargers. Our low-BOM architecture is compatible with surface-mount components, enabling sleek micro-charger designs.

Active-Semi’s automotive high-power DC/DC products are capable of charging two iPad® devices at 2.1A simultaneously, at a charging rate equivalent to a wall-plug power adapter. Our solutions achieve the strict “Made for iPad®” performance standards for power accessories such as over-voltage 40V pulse protection and strict over-current-protection (OCP) and constant-current constant-voltage (CC/CV) requirements.

Suitable for one-piece or two-piece car chargers, our solutions include cable/cord compensation circuitry that can be used to lower the cable cost while meeting electrical specifications at the device side charging connector.

The application circuit below shows a conventional ACT4513 enabled single-output charger. ACT4513 is a wide input voltage, high efficiency ActiveCC™ step-down DC/DC converter that operates in either CV (Constant Output Voltage) mode or CC (Constant Output Current) mode; providing up to 2A output current at 210kHz switching frequency. ActiveCC™ is a patent-pending control scheme to achieve highest accuracy sensorless constant current control, eliminating the conventional expensive current sense resistor. ActiveCC™ is featured throughout the ACT45xx product family.
